Thanks to Fiction Southeast for inviting me to share my thoughts on writing "Girl in Doubt," one of the stories in my short story collection Girl Zoo (co-written with Aimee Parkison). You can read "Girl in Doubt" here and my process piece here. Earlier today I guest lectured in a seminar on Critical Animal Studies. I was reminded again of the weight of the word zoo, of the role humans play in capturing, detaining, and confining wild animals. Of what it means to believe that animals exist for you, instead of with you. Of the way humans forget that we, too, are animals. New footage taken of northern and southern resident orcas should be a reminder to everyone that sentient beings don't belong in captivity. Watch here.

I don't know if I should be flattered or freaked out or amused, but following my recent participation in an entirely legal, respectful political protest, I discovered that my usual blog page views had shot up to 676 in one day, largely coming from Russia. So hi, new friends. I'm glad that you found my blog, and hope you enjoy my poetry and fiction! If you are queer, I hope my writing gives you hope. If you're a bot, maybe I'll title my next book Troll Farm.

This incident reminds me of a fascinating conversation I had with my students a week ago about the loss of privacy in the age of the internet. We had a delightful, animated conversation that felt a little odd and scattered, until I realized we were all talking about different concepts of privacy. I was thinking about literal physical privacy. Being alone in a room. Studying in the library. Writing in a diary no one else would ever read. Sharing a photograph with one other person. My students, however, were all talking about privacy settings. About the difficulty or ease of choosing who sees what on shared devices or platforms. Their concept of privacy assumed an audience; for them, privacy meant starting with an audience, then filtering it out. For me, privacy meant being alone, or sharing something with just a few people. The concept of strangers was included in my students' idea of privacy. Strangers were always there; it was just a question of when to filter them out.

I don't move through the world with a great deal of nostalgia; I tend to focus on present day pleasures and problems. I'm not particularly sentimental. But I miss certain forms of privacy, including both solitude and the gift of choosing when to share time, words, and affection with one person. I'm not on Facebook because I don't trust the company's politics or surveillance tactics, so finding that my scruffy, old school blog had been visited by a team of bots was disheartening. I wish I could pretend all 676 page views were LGBTQ folks in Russia newly discovering my writing, but while I'm an optimist, I'm not a fool.

For you readers, an update: I'm writing feverishly, working on several collaborations at once, including a series of science fiction stories and a manuscript of prose poems. The urgent, joyful need to create is stronger than the fearful, destructive need to monitor, manipulate, and control. Maybe it's time to re-watch The Lives of Others.

It's great to read a review that captures our subversive intentions. My co-writer Aimee Parkison and I set out to critique these mainstream narratives by viewing our fictional female characters through an experimental queer feminist lens. This review elegantly articulates our project, locating it within the cultural moment and contemporary literary/political movements. Girl Zoo will be published by Fiction Collective 2 later this month. Contact me for information about review copies, author interviews and readings, and anything else pertaining to our zoo.
I'm happy to offer a workshop on compression in prose poetry at Open Books in Seattle's Wallingford neighborhood. This two-part workshop will be held on Sunday, January 20th and Sunday, January 27th from 10-12.

Tiny Boxes, Teeming

Compression forces us to choose wisely, to winnow, to do without. Simultaneously, we celebrate what remains and the surprise that emerges. This two-part course will incorporate strategies for compressing narrative or lyric text into prose poetry. We’ll read samples of brilliant compressed prose poems, practice writing exercises, and read our work aloud or in pairs. There will be homework between the first and second class sessions, so green light some writing time between. Preregistration is required, and the cost is $50 per person. This two-part class will take place at Open Books on January 20 and 27, 10:00 am – noon.

I'm thrilled to announce a new short story collection, co-written with Aimee Parkison and published by Fiction Collective Two. Girl Zoo is a series of loosely linked stories, organized around the concept of confinement and coercion. In each story, a woman or a girl struggles to escape a cage, sometimes literal (hot car, hot seat, hot pants) and sometimes figurative (a gaslighting lover, a corporate ladder). Aimee and I wrote most of the stories together, but several pieces were solo works, which allowed us to expand the boundaries of our usual styles. Together, supporting each other as artists and as female-identified creatures, we got graphic in this collection. While there are beautiful, lyrical moments, much of the book is brutal, blood-spattered, angry, raw. It's also funny, if ballooning breasts and dick jokes and creepy first dates and mansplaining are funny. You tell me! Think Hannah Gadsby's Nanette. Think Etgar Keret's Suddenly, A Knock on the Door. You can pre-order Girl Zoo on Amazon here; the book will be released on February 19, 2019. I'm grateful to Lance Olsen and Lidia Yuknavitch for blurbs that make me want to read their books all over again:

"Part dark angry fairytales, part avant-gothic myths, part surreal fever dreams, and always genuinely unique, Girl Zoo is a remarkable collaborative collection of concentrated narraticules about 56 captive women who are the same woman, not the same woman, and not not the same woman. Aimee Parkison and Carol Guess explore the thematics of the commodified and controlled female subject, complicating the problem, nuancing it, metaphorizing it so the reader sees it always anew, yet never offering any easy way out. The rhythms, syntax, vocabulary, and meta-logic feel childlike, yet the content remains relentlessly bloody, violent, somehow naively (and, of course, not naively at all) dangerous to the bone."
—Lance Olsen, author of Dreamlives of Debris

“Girl Zoo is a breathtaking journey inside the cold hard facts of gender and sexual incarceration. Taking the "woman as object" trope to its logical extreme, these stories stage a break-in and dare the reader to imagine what it would take for women and girls to break out of the very narratives that keep us caged. A triumph of the imaginal in the face of a culture that would see us silenced, dead, and gone. Read these girls, change your life.”
On November 28, 2018 I'm reading with two of my favorite writers, Bruce Beasley and Suzanne Paola. We all teach in the MFA Creative Writing program at Western Washington University, a relatively new program focused on hybrid, multi-genre, and experimental writing. On the 28th we're reading for Words West, a Seattle-based literary series held at my favorite West Seattle coffee shop, C&P Coffee Company, 5612 California Ave SW, Seattle, WA. Bruce and Suzanne are brilliant, explosive readers; I'm planning on reading new short fiction. We're excited to share this with you!

Lastly, I have big news about a NEW BOOK forthcoming in 2019! But I promised I'd stay quiet until the press announces it, so I'm squirming. I can't wait to celebrate! Stay tuned.

True Ash lives in print and not just in my head. It's always strange when a book gets born, because until it's born it lives in my imagination, but after, it lives in someone else's. So here it is, growing green among houseplants. True Ash consists of interlinked short stories co-written with Elizabeth J. Colen. If you're interested in reviewing a copy, drop me an email and I'll happily pass it along! As always, let me know what you think. ps Theo fell asleep on the job
Collaboration feels like cramming foolish limbs into a clown car. Walking a tightrope that turns into a plank.
